Flight Cases for Guitars and Effects Pedals
71Do you remember a time when you were at a concert and wondered how they got all of the bands gears to the venue safely? The answer is flight cases. Any touring musician would be crazy not to have them. They are super strong, durable, safe and secure. Here's a quick look into the guitar flight case.
Being on tour for weeks or months at a time takes its toll on the artists gear as well the artists themselves. With the dozens of tour crew carrying all the equipment to and from the trucks and venues, setting up gear and taking the back down, gives the equipment a serious beating. When the show is over and the gear is packed away to put back into the trucks it gets thrown around like empty boxes, not boxes full of expensive musical instruments.
This is where flight cases come into their own for protecting our guitars. These are not normal guitar cases. While a hard case will protect your guitar, a flight case takes this protection to a new level. They are designed to be extra strong to take the beating endured on a long tour around the world. The flight cases are made from the very strongest materials, aluminium, polypropylene etc. They mean serious business.
Not only are they very strong, they are safe and secure too. They are made secure with locks and the ability to add padlocks, so that they stop any potential thieves from getting inside. The only people who get in are the people you want to. As well as being secure and safe from being opened, they are also totally padded internally using shock absorbing foam, custom cut for your gear to keep it safe.
Sadly this security and strength come at a cost. The materials used in the cases are not generally light and the internal fittings and security add to the weight. If you are simply playing at a local bar or in a town a few hours away do you really need all these extras and extra weight? As well as being heavy they are also very bulky.
Plus you are going to need somewhere to keep all the cases, unless you have an industrial unit you can use you might be better with another type of case. You also have to consider the price, flight cases are very expensive when compared to regular hard or soft cases. Unless you have spent thousands on top of the range equipment and tour often, do you really need flight cases for your guitars and pedals? You might be better off with a regular hard case.

They also make flight cases for heads and cabs also. I wouldn't leave for tour without those either.

Very cool. I remember seeing Godspeed, You Black Emperor live a few years ago, and one of the guitarists had one of these cases open in front of him with what seemed like a hundred effects pedals.
